Lynx upgrade trainers enter service
June 01, 2010
New training systems for upgraded Westland Lynx maritime helicopters have been fielded by the naval air arms of Germany and the U.K.
German Navy flight crews have begun training on a Sea Lynx Mk88A cockpit procedures trainer (CPT) produced by ESG Elektroniksystem und Logistik. Based at Nordholz and representing the IFR 2 avionics upgrade, the modular CPT has seven touch-screen monitors simulating the helicopter cockpit.
CAE, meanwhile, has completed a major upgrade of the Royal Navy’s Lynx HAS.8 full- mission simulator and delivered a new Lynx CPT and systems-based trainer (SBT) to Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in the U.K.
The upgrade incorporates the Saturn anti-jam UHF radio, Successor identification friend-or-foe and the latest defensive aids suite. The Lynx Saturn Radio Update is also reflected in the CPT and SBT.
The CAE Simfinity-based SBT replaces obsolete computer-based trainers used for aircrew and ground crew classroom training. CAE says the graphic virtual cockpit is driven by the same aircraft model as the Lynx Mk8 full- mission simulator.
